Day 12 – It’s Christmas!!

I know I had initially planned for Day 12 to be Christmas Eve anticipation but after the bitch of a day I had on Christmas Eve my blog was the last thing I felt like doing. Little Miss hasn’t been very well since around Saturday. On Tuesday I took her to the doctor’s and she was prescribed some penicillin. I was told that if she had a reaction to bring her back. She seemed fine with it on Wednesday morning but Wednesday afternoon she started throwing up. So we had a trip to the GP who checked her over and said she didn’t have an allergy to the penicillin and that the excess coughing probably brought on the throw up. Oh fun and games or what?!

Christmas Day was therefore not cancelled and we had family around for Christmas lunch…. we had my Nain (so Little Miss’s great grandmother), hubby’s parents and brother. We had a slight panic over the turkey on Christmas Eve – it hadn’t defrosted much and thankfully my Mam spotted it and sorted it out for us. Whilst Mam was sorting the turkey we attacked the veg so they were ready for Christmas Day. I ordered veg from a local business and they were delivered free of charge on Christmas Eve. Oh they smelt good! Very fresh!!IMG_2007.JPG

Christmas Day arrived and we were up at around 7am. Hubby put the turkey in (which had finally defrosted!). The Christmas meal turned out to be lovely! Here’s a photo of me preparing the stuffing and sausagemeat (the wine glass isn’t mine!) and then the cooked spread…. it was yummy!

Little Miss had lots of presents from everyone! Here’s just a selection… IMG_2008.JPGIMG_2009.JPG

We had some nice presents as well including new briefcases which will be so handy for work! But my favourite present has to be the “Rocket Powered” t-shirt I got from hubby. Just a shame I’m not going to be able to wear it for a few months. I also love the fact he got me the Nashville DVD Boxset! I can finally catch up with series 2! His presents are the ones on the right – I got him the Marvel Encyclopedia because everytime he sees a Marvel film he asks questions that I can’t answer! So now he can look it up himself!

That was pretty much our Christmas really! Hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and here’s to a Happy New Year!

Day 11 – Christmas Preparations

Well Christmas is almost upon us and I don’t feel ready! Part of the reason for this is that Little Miss has been unwell. She started with a cough on Saturday and by Sunday evening she had a runny nose and a high temperature. She was with Nain yesterday and Nain said she had a high temp all day. So this morning I took her to the doctor and she’s now on antibiotics for a possible chest infection. She still has a runny nose but her temp has reduced. She’s currently fast asleep and here’s hoping she sleeps through! She woke at 3.30am this morning and I ended up co-sleeping with her on the spare bed in the nursery.

So this is a quick update to the Christmas preparations!

We’re sorted on gifts for most people but I need to sort out my Nain’s present – she’s here tomorrow (eek!), and then I need to sort a gift for my best friends. I’m thinking some chocolates and some soapy stuff. Also thinking about giving them one of my homemade scented candles.

I also need to wrap up Little Miss’ gifts!

Hubby has been to do the final food shop this evening. He’s bought a festive chocolate cake (there wasn’t much choice!) and has got some wines in ready for the family that are visiting. The only thing left now is the veg which is being delivered tomorrow:

We have hubby’s family coming over and now my Nain has decided she’s coming as well! Dad is dropping her off tomorrow evening. She only decided today that she was coming! So now tomorrow I need to sort out the spare room! Currently all the decoration boxes are hiding there!

How are your preparations coming along? Are you ready for Christmas?

Day 10 – Christmas Food

One of my favourite things about Christmas is the food! I’m lucky enough to have a wonderful husband who can cook! This year we’re catering for 5 plus Little Miss and 2 pups! So here’s the planned menu…

We’re thinking of maybe making a soup. Recently we’ve tasted a honey and roast parsnip soup which was absolutely lovely and we’re hoping to replicate that. We’ve not actually tested the recipe yet but we’re going to make it on Christmas Eve. If it’s no good then we won’t serve a starter.

We’re all about tradition in our house so it’ll be Turkey and trimmings all the way! Turkey with mash potato, roast potato, croquettes, red cabbage, sausagemeat, stuffing, cauliflower cheese, brocoli, leeks and of course pigs in blankets!

Here’s some photos of 2012 and 2013….

I do enjoy Christmas pudding but unfortunately hubby doesn’t like it so we’re giving it a miss. Instead we’re sticking to good old sponge cake! He’s been busy making cakes for work’s Christmas Jumper day! Looking pretty good… and bloody taste lovely! He even made some gluten free ones for one of the bosses and some rice crispy cakes for my other boss.

Have your got plans for Christmas dinner?

Day 8 – Christmas Photos

I know I’ve technically missed Day 8 and that today is Day 9 so I’m going to combine the two today. As it happens both Day 8 – Christmas Photos and Day 9 Christmas Memories compliment each other anyway! (By the way yesterday’s blog post would explain my absence).

For the life of me I cannot find any of my old Christmas photos! I have no idea where they’ve gone! There’s one photo of me and my cousin with a snowman that I wanted to show but alas it’s lost! So I’m afraid the only Christmas photos I have to show (that I haven’t shared already) are some of our first Christmas together in our first house.

(Oh and yes that is the very same Penguin!)

Day 9 – Christmas Memories

One of my favourite Christmas memories is the Christmas my cousins came to stay with us. My memory might not reflect the actual circumstances but what I remember is waking up on Christmas Day and going downstairs to see the front room full of presents for us all! I also remember getting some Sylvanian Families but I can’t remember if it was the same Christmas or not.

Then there’s the Christmas we had snow! And we made a snowman that was as big as us – that’s the photo I wanted to share! Snow at Christmas is always special! Nothing beats a White Christmas.

Another memory of Christmas with my cousins (at Taid’s house) is the turkey being off! We’d had to order a big turkey to feed us all (9 of us in total plus the dog!) but when Nain got up at 5am to prepare it, she opened the fridge and it had gone off! If I remember correctly it had gone green! Urgh!!

Then of course one of my favourite memories is visiting Santa at Llechwedd Slate Caverns. It’s a memory I hope to replicate with Little Miss. I know it won’t be the same because they’ve changed Santa’s Grotto due to the Bounce Below attraction but still we’re going to visit on Sunday to “bysnesu” (that’s Welsh for “nosey”). When Little Miss is old enough I’ll take her trampolining (assuming it’s still open) because I think it’d be fun!!

{edit}Oh my word I can’t believe I published this without mentioning my favourite Christmas ever! It’s the Christmas that this little cutie was brought into my life! My Mam had warned my Uncle not to give me a dog for Christmas but he turned up on Christmas evening and pulled the cutest black and tan JRT puppy from his pocket. He was so dinky! I’ll write more about him in a future post. {/edit}

If truth be told, it’s been a bit of an emotional week what with Little Miss starting in nursery for the first time and then today marks the two year anniversary of Taid’s passing. I miss him more than ever this year.

This is the reason I’ve not done yesterday’s 12 Days of Christmas post. Sorry guys!
