People keep asking where do you want to go on holiday and if I’m honest, why would I want to go anywhere when I have so much to do on my own doorstep. This year I aim to to visit some treasures that I’ve yet to visit despite the fact I’ve lived here all my life!
1) Plas Brondanw and Bentwr
This is where Sir Clough Williams-Ellis (creator of Portmeirion) lived. It’s designed in the same Italianesque architecture as Portmeirion. It’s a beautiful building and whilst I don’t think the house is open to the public, the gardens are. I’ve been told there’s a little coffee shop there now. My aim is to visit on a sunny day, stroll around the gardens before walking the circular route up to the tower (Bentwr) and back down past the quarry. On the way back I’ll be searching the horse chestnut trees for Mam and Dad’s initials which were carved in it when they were teens.
2) Bodnant Garden
I have never been to Bodnant Garden! People are always shocked when I say it as it’s one of the top places to visit in North Wales. The gardens differ depending on season so I might have to make two trips – one to see the Snowdrops and one to see the Laburnum archway. I’ve seen photos of both and it looks stunning!
3) Llyn Idwal
Llyn Idwal is a lake located at Cwm Idwal in the Glyderau mountains. It’s an extremely popular spot for both locals and tourists and I can certainly see why! The scenery is just stunning! I’ve yet to see it with my own eyes and that’s why it’s on my list of places to visit in North Wales.
4) Yr Wyddfa / Snowdon
If we’re thinking of hiking, then I have to include Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). It’s the highest mountain in Wales and considering I’ve lived here all my life (currently live 11 miles from Snowdon, previously only 8 miles as the crow flies), it pains me to say that I have never been to the top of Snowdon. I’ve been about 3/4 of the way up on the train once but never to the top.
5) South Stack
South Stack is a little island off the coast of Holyhead on Anglesey. It has a lighthouse on the island and it’s one of those iconic places on the Welsh Coast.

Great list. I was born and bred in north Wales and lived there for 25 years but I haven’t done any of the things on this list! Shameful isn’t it! We don’t live to far away now, so definitely am going to add a few of these to our Summer to do list.
I’ve always wanted to go to the top of Snowdon by train… I must do it! But I also think I’ll be adding these other places to my list too 🙂
