10 Things To Do/See In Llanberis

I love Llanberis! It’s almost like being home without having to travel. Anyhow, here’s my list of 10 things to do/see in Llanberis.

  1. Amgueddfa Llechi Cymru / National Slate Museum

Top of the list has to be the Amgueddfa Lechi (Slate Museum). It is one of my most favouritest places to visit! Always plenty to do there including the slate splitting demonstrations, exploring the Fron Haul period houses or visiting the waterwheel – you’ll never get bored! Also, please keep an eye out on their Facebook page for upcoming events – lots of crafts sessions during school holidays which makes it a fab place to take the kids.

  2. Rheilffordd Llyn Padarn Lake Railway

The BEST way to travel to the museum has to be taking the Lake Railway train. Always a pleasurable experience. Also another one to keep an eye out for events – their superhero events are fab! Kids dressed as superheros get to travel free!

  3. Chwarel Vivian Quarry

Another favourite spot of mine is Vivian Quarry. The stunning lake is hidden just beside the slate museum. If you’re braver than me, then why not try some diving with Vivian Diving Centre?

  4. Ropeworks Active

My Little Miss conquering the Low Ropes course - photo shows her on the course with the High Ropes tower in the background and the sun shining through the trees
My eldest absolutely loves Ropeworks! There’s a low ropes course for the little ones and a high ropes course for older children and adults. The big swing is also available for ages 5 upwards… brave it if you dare! But not only that, Ropeworks offer other adventures including hill walking, caving, coasteering and gorge scrambling.

  5. Snowdon Mountain Railway

Snowdon itself is a must-see in the area and Snowdon Mountain Railway is the easiest way to the top. If you’re thinking of going then I would recommend booking in advance – it gets pretty busy over there! If you don’t manage to book a train trip then I would suggest at least watching the video that they have about the history of the railway.

  6. Electric Mountain

The visitor centre is currently undergoing a revamp but the tours are still operating. I’ve still not experienced the tour but it sounds like a great one. The tour explains all about the hydro electric scheme that’s within the mountain. Fascinating stuff.

  7. Padarn Country Park

There’s lots of walks around Padarn Country Park. There’s a lovely circular walk around the mini lake or how about a little trek up to the old Quarry Hospital.

  8. Sword in the Stone

This is a relatively new addition to Llanberis but the sword in the stone lies next to the lake and is the perfect photo op. As you can see, the littles couldn’t resist!

  9. Paddleboarding Llyn Padarn

If you’re a bit of a waterbaby then take advantage of the lake and go paddleboarding (or kayaking or whatever). Snowdonia Watersports offer paddleboarding sessions on the lake as well as kit hire.

  10. Chwarel Dinorwig Quarry & Anglesey Barracks

The ruins of Anglesey Barracks at Dinorwig Quarry. Two rows of quarrymen houses made of slate.
If you want a bit more of a hike (without having to scale a mountain) then finding your way down from Dinorwig to the slate museum is a good one. It will take you via Anglesey Barracks which housed quarrymen until the quarry closed in the 1960s.

So that’s my list. It’s only short but there’s so much more to add. What others would you add to the list of things to do or see in Llanberis?
