Today is #DyddMiwsigCymru a day to celebrate Welsh music! We are so lucky in Wales to have a fabulous Welsh music scene.. and I’ll be honest, it’s not a scene I know much about. However, for today I’m going to share some of my current favourite Welsh music artists.
Yws Gwynedd
Our go-to artist when we want to listen to Welsh music is of course Yws Gwynedd. His Sebona Fi song is a family favourite. My littlest knows all most of the words and absolutely loves singing and dancing to it. Although she never calls the song by it’s proper name, she always calls it “Bywyd Yn Braf”. The best misheard lyric has to be from his “Sgrin” song…
Yeah alright I’m a bit biased as he was in school with me and I’ve been a fan since he was in a band called Yr Anhygoel. They were fab too! To this day I still have their debut single on CD!
Gai Toms (formerly known as Mim Twm Llai)
Another local lad from my hometown of Blaenau Ffestiniog, and a very talented artist. His best songs are about the characters he’s met. I love listening to his songs as it reminds me of home. My top song choices has to be:
- Robin Pantcoch – a song about one of the local characters and it’s just beautiful
- Gwe Pry Cop Tom – another one about a local character but not as soulful as Robin Pantcoch. It’s a warning not to clean Tom’s cobwebs!
- Sunshine Dan – yet another character song and a very jolly tune.
- Tafarn Yn Nolrhedyn – a song about how a pub is needed in the village of Dolrhedyn
Rhys Gwynfor
A recent find for me but his song Canolfan Arddio has been stuck in my head ever since it was released. Such a catchy song and very much deserved to be track of the week on BBC Radio Cymru. His other song Capten is a very easygoing song and a lovely listen. Can’t wait to hear more from him.
HyWelsh
Another recent find is HyWelsh which is the hilarious pairing of the Welsh Whisperer and Hywel Pitts. Their songs are snippets taking the mick out of various things from current events to Welsh soap opera! Our favourite song is “Tafodiaith” which sees the duo sing about the difference between North Wales Welsh and South Wales Welsh. It’s hilarious and really accurate!
These are my current favourites to listen to but there is so much more to choose from….. just search for #DyddMiwsigCymru on Twitter to discover more.
