I would&#8217;ve loved to be around during the great steam train era but alas I was born too late. However that doesn&#8217;t mean I should miss out. There are over <a href=\"http:\/\/www.heritage-railways.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">100 heritage railways<\/a> in the UK and I&#8217;m lucky enough to have half a dozen of them pretty much on doorstep here in North Wales.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Steam Train Bucket List<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Having said that there&#8217;s a fair few of them that I&#8217;ve yet to have the pleasure of visiting. So with that in mind I&#8217;ve made a steam train bucket list for 2020.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Victorian Weekend on F&amp;WHR<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-11085\" src=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1178.jpg\" alt=\"Ffestiniog Railway's Merddin Emrys steam engine at Blaenau Ffestiniog station\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1178.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1178-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Every year the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festrail.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway<\/a> host a Victorian Weekend ar Porthmadog Harbour Station. I&#8217;ve never been but after watching Steam Train Britain I really want to go! People come to the Harbour Station dressed up in their Victorian gladrags and it looks like such good fun. I might not get all dressed up (I don&#8217;t think I own any Victorian clothing) but I&#8217;d be happy just to see others getting dressed up. I might even get to meet Queen Victoria herself!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>See the Gravity Slate Trains<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This was also featured on that <a href=\"https:\/\/uktvplay.uktv.co.uk\/shows\/steam-train-britain\/watch-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steam Train Britain<\/a> programme. One of the Ffestiniog Railway engines will pull wagons laden with slate up to Dduallt station where they are uncoupled. Gravity will then pull them towards Porthmadog&#8230; but not to worry, they wagons aren&#8217;t left to their own devices. The train will have brakesmen to control the speed of the train. Now I&#8217;m not sure if passengers are allowed to travel on the gravity train but if you take a peek at the videos on YouTube it looks like one awesome ride! Better than any rollercoaster!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>South Snowdonia Railways<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11119\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11119\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11119 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1426.jpg\" alt=\"Fairbourne Railway\" width=\"1200\" height=\"675\" srcset=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1426.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1426-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11119\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 Fairbourne Railway<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Whilst researching the Santa Trains I realised that I haven&#8217;t been on any of the South Snowdonia railways! So I aim to tick off at least two of the following this year<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fairbournerailway.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fairbourne Railway<\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.talyllyn.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Talyllyn Railway<\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/bala-lake-railway.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bala Lake Railway<\/a><br \/>\n&#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.corris.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corris Railway<\/a><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Visit Lakeside &amp; Haverthwaite Railway<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11117\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11117\" style=\"width: 1084px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11117 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1427.jpg\" alt=\"Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway\" width=\"1084\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1427.jpg 1084w, https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1427-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1084px) 100vw, 1084px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11117\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9 The Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>I&#8217;m hoping to have a weekend away in the Lake District again over Easter and therefore adding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lakesiderailway.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lakeside &amp; Haverthwaite Railway<\/a> to my list. We passed the station and the trains look huge! My husband really wants to go on one of the big trains&#8230; or as he refers to them &#8220;a proper train&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>See the Flying Scotsman<\/strong><\/h3>\n<figure id=\"attachment_11115\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11115\" style=\"width: 1200px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-11115 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1415.jpg\" alt=\"The Flying Scotsman steam engine\" width=\"1200\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1415.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/becster.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/img_1415-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-11115\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u00a9National Railway Museum<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Built in 1923 in Doncaster, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.flyingscotsman.org.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Flying Scotsman<\/a> has to be the most famous steam train in the word (discounting Thomas the Tank that is). I&#8217;m genuinely gutted that I missed the Flying Scotsman&#8217;s visit to North Wales back in November but alas I found out too late to be able to see it. I&#8217;m hoping to catch a glimpse of the famous train this year instead.<\/p>\n<p>There so much more I want to see for example the Glenfinnan Viaduct (most famous for being featured in the Harry Potter films), walk the Cwm Prysor viaduct to name but another two.
