The music wasn’t too bad – in fact I have a friend who would argue it’s the best era for music.

However today I’m concentrating on some films. I watch a lot of films and have come to realise that a lot of my favourite films are from the 80s. So here’s my top 10!

1) Ghostbusters 2

Both Ghostbusters films were made in the 80s with the first being released the year I was born.

I’ve been told that Ghostbusters 2 was slated by critics and that the opinion seems to be that the first film was better. I would disagree. I have always preferred the second. Please don’t ask me why!

I think it’s thanks to this film I had a crush on Bill Murray! Who wouldn’t love a sarcastic Ghostbuster right?

2) Twins

Not quite my favourite Arnie film – his best era was the 90s I think – but best one of the 80s for me. I know I should be putting Terminator in here but meh not really my type if film.

So in Twins is a story if two brothers who never knew each other existed. With Danny DeVito acting the other twin you can imagine they’re far from identical.

3) Dirty Rotten Scoundrels

This has to be my second favourite Michael Caine film (first would be Muppets Christmas Carol).

Starring Michael Caine, Steve Martin and Glenn Headley it is a fantastic film set in the South of France. It’s pretty much the story of how two hustlers get entangled and try to out do each other to con a beautiful woman. Here’s one of my favourite scenes:

It was made into a musical and I would have loved to see it. Especially since Robert Lindsay was acting Lawrence in it.

4) Beverley Hills Cop 2

Ahh Eddie Murphy the king of the 80s films! (There’ll be a few more of his films on this list).

In the first film we see Murphy a Detroit cop travel to Beverly Hills in search of a killer. In this instalment he returns to Beverly Hills to solve the Alphabet crimes and find who shot his friend Detective Bogermill. He teams up with his Beverly Hills police chums – Taggert and Rosewood and the usual hijinks ensue.

If truth be told I might prefer the third film but since that’s a 90s film that’ll be on another list

5) Coming To America

Another Eddie Murphy film and probably my favourite! Absolutely love this film. I think it’s because both Murphy and Arsenio Hall acted a number of characters. The film is about an Arfrican prince who rejects his arranged marriage and moves to Queens, New York to find a wife. When in NYC he pretends to be a commoner so that his wife to be falls in love with him as a man rather than him as a prince – classic tale based in Queens! Definitely worth a watch!

6) Trading Places

Now this film is another Murphy film but I had never watched it as a child – a bit too graphic possibly what with some nudity (even I will admit that Jamie Lee Curtis had a fab body back in the day!).

This one is a life switch story where a posh wealthy man’s life is turned upside down as a result of a bet between his two wealthy employers. They make him a down and out and promote a lowly conartist into their company where he becomes successful. The pair found out about the bet and then they enact revenge on their employers.

7) Big

Little Josh hates the fact that he’s too small to go on the rides at a local fair so he wishes that he was bigger. Next day he wakes up as a full-grown adult! He gets a job working at a toy store and encounters Susan. Josh initially struggles as an adult but eventually learns to embrace his new-found freedom. However he soon realises that he misses his mum and wishes to be a child again.

A fab Tom Hanks film which includes the famous piano scene – we’ve actually been to this store!

8) Turner & Hooch

Another Tom Hanks film – actually this one’s better than Big since not only has Tom Hanks in it but also has a very funny dog!!

Scott Turner has 3 days left in the local police department before he moves to a bigger city to get some “real” cases, not just misdemeanors. Then Amos Reed is murdered, and Scott Turner sets himself on the case. The closest thing to a witness in the case is Amos Reed’s dog, Hooch, which Scott Turner has to take care of if it’s going to avoid being “put to sleep”.

9) Ruthless People

Basic storyline is that DeVito is plotting to kill his horrible wife (Midler) so he can marry his mistress. Before she is killed, she is kidnapped and held hostage by a young couple whom DeVito cheated. Midler soon realises that her husband is not trying to get her released and befriends the young couple and extract revenge on lowlife DeVito.

Naturally a combination of Danny DeVito and Bette Midler is always good for a laugh!!

10) Die Hard

Last but by no means least, my favourite Christmas film – DIE HARD!! Oh yeah! If you’ve not heard of this film (where ya been?!) here’s a good summary provided by IMDb.com

NYPD cop John McClane goes on a Christmas vacation to visit his wife Holly in Los Angeles where she works for the Nakatomi Corporation. While they are at the Nakatomi headquarters for a Christmas party, a group of bank robbers led by Hans Gruber take control of the building and hold everyone hostage, with the exception of John, while they plan to perform a lucrative heist. Unable to escape and with no immediate police response, John is forced to take matters into his own hands. – Sam, IMDb.com

Now if you’ve been reading my blog for a while you might remember me mentioning my love for Alan Rickman. Well this is the reason for it – his portrayal of Hans Gruber is just amazing! Of course, the film’s headliner is Bruce Willis who is also very good! Without a doubt one of the best films of the 80s!

Do you agree with me? Or are there any other films you would add to my list? Would you say there’s a better era for films?

I believe that some of the best things were made in the 1980s *cough*born1984anyone??*cough* The fashion would have to be forgiven, MC Hammer style trousers and shoulder pads make me shudder!
