Travel Tales – Sauze D’Oulx

In February 2008 my best friend and I went on a week long skiing trip to Sauze D’Oulx, Italy. It was the first time we had gone on holiday together and I still don’t know how I managed to persuade her to go skiing considering she’s more of a sun person!

We flew into Milan and there was an awesome view of the Alps from the plane. Then got on a coach from Milan which took us up I to the mountains and to the village of Sauze D’Oulx. The scenery on the way up was beautiful! The village itself was typical ski resort style – chalets, narrow streets and of course snow! I can’t remember which hotel we stayed at but it was a 3 star hotel in the middle of the village. Our room was pretty basic but we did have a great view from our window. As you can see you could pretty much ski down to our hotel door – if we were good enough skiers!

The package holiday included 2 hour skiing lesson each morning for the 6 days we were there. On the first day we all had to show how much we could ski. I had been on skiing trips with school but my friend had never skied before. So unfortunately we wrer put in different classes for the lessons. But we would meet up at lunch and then we’d do some skiing on our own. The first two days I joined her on the “baby” slopes so she could practice and gain confidence. When she was happy we went higher up the mountain and did some of the longer but easier runs. The view from up there was just stunning!

We booked ourselves to do some activities which included bum boarding – masses of fun – and skidooing. Unfortunately because I’m a crap skidoo driver we were a bit too slow on the trek upwards so the leader decided that he would drive us down. So we were both riding on the back of the skidoo and the leader took us down the ski slopes so it was a very fast ride. I loved it but my poor friend was scared stiff by the experience!

We decided not to go skiing on the 6th day as Wales were playing Italy in the Six Nations rugby tournament. Now considering we were in Italy we thought “great! We can watch in the pub with some locals!” – turns out, they’re not really into rugby in Sauze D’Oulx or there were no locals there! We did watch the match in the pub with one other Welsh guy and a group of young English guys – who weren’t very nice but that was to be expected since the Welsh/English rivalry is a big thing in Six Nations rugby. It was worth going to watch the game though since Wales thrashed Italy!

  1. I have such a bad sense of balance – can’t even ride a bike! – that there is no way I’d ever risk skiing but it looks beautiful there!

I’d love to try. I reckon I would love it. Looks so beautiful too. Maybe when the twins are a little older. 🙂 Jess xx

  3. I was lucky enough to have been sking with school and definitely got the bug. I honestly can’t wait to take the girls skiing although I think we’re going to have to stick to Chill Factore for a while. x

  4. Well you see my sense of balance is crap – I mean I trip over my own feet – but suprisingly I can manage to ski! Maybe you’d enjoy the apres ski a bit more! 🙂 x
